Basado en una historia real, este es el intrépido viaje lleno de riesgos de una niña que va rumbo a cruzar la frontera hacia los Estados Unidos para trasladar a su familia a un lugar seguro durante la Revolución Mexicana.

Es 1913, y mientras la Revolución hace estragos en México, la madre de Petra Luna ha muerto. Antes de que su padre sea forzado a pelear con los federales, Petra, de solo doce años, le hace una promesa: cuidar de su abuelita y sus hermanitos, Amelia y Luisito, hasta que todos vuelvan a reunirse. Cuando los federales atacan su pueblo, Petra y su familia huyen rumbo al norte a través del desierto impacáble en busca de un lugar seguro en un mundo lleno de crueldad. 
 
Cada noche, Petra se aferra a sus sueños, en especial el de aprender a leer y escribir. Su abuelita insiste en que esos son sueños descalzos, destinados a no hacerse realidad, pero Petra se niega a escuchar. A través de campos de batalla y el desierto, de hambre y de miedos, Petra no se detiene ante nada para mantener a salvo a su familia y guiarlos hacia la frontera de Estados Unidos, rumbo a una vida en la que sus sueños descalzos puedan, finalmente, hacerse realidad.  

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

Based on a true story, the tale of one girl's perilous journey to cross the U.S. border and lead her family to safety during the Mexican Revolution.

It is 1913, and twelve-year-old Petra Luna's mama has died while the Revolution rages in Mexico. Before her papa is dragged away by soldiers, Petra vows to him that she will care for the family she has left—her abuelita, little sister Amelia, and baby brother, Luisito—until they can be reunited. They flee north through the unforgiving desert as their town burns, searching for safe harbor in a world that offers none.

Each night when Petra closes her eyes, she holds her dreams close, especially her long-held desire to learn to read. Abuelita calls these barefoot dreams: "They're like us barefoot peasants and indios—they're not meant to go far." But Petra refuses to listen.

Through battlefields and deserts, hunger and fear, Petra will stop at nothing to keep her family safe and lead them to a better life across the U.S. border—a life where her barefoot dreams could finally become reality.
